Return to Color Phonics

The Color Phonics System The Color Phonics System associates sounds with specific assonant colors rather than with confusing diacritical marks. Instead of memorizing over 100 different spelling patterns and the possible vowel sounds they make, a student only needs to memorize 14 colors. The 'e' in red makes the short 'e' sound: vowel letters which make the short 'e' sound are colored red. The 'ee' in green makes the long 'e' sound: vowel letters which make the long 'e' sound are colored green. The 'ay' in gray makes the long 'a' sound: vowel letters which make the long 'a' sound are colored gray. The 'ow' in brown makes the 'ow' sound: vowel letters which make the 'ow' sound are colored brown.
